Cancer awareness month

“Devil in Disguise”: Did you know Lifestyle factors can cause Cancer!

“No matter what the statistics say, there is always a way”. But the fact is that all stats Globally say, there is a high rise in the number of cases of most non-communicable diseases, especially Cancer is at high risk across ages and continents. It’s high time that we really focus on some important Lifestyle factors that could be totally avoided. Each year we hope to see these statistics of Incidence rate going up and each year we fail…. it’s getting to be like a “Devil in disguise” always waiting for us, wanting us!!!

What we need to have been a change in the way we think, our attitudes…It’s pretty easy and common to say “Chalta hain na bhai, kuch nahi hota hain. Daily thoda alcohol pene se kya problem hoga, iss se Cancer nahi hota?
Or “I like to have a suntan every year in the Caribbean, I use sunblock, so I don’t have a risk of skin cancer??”
Or “Isn’t it true that people who smoke more than a packet of cigarettes get cancer, I mean I actually use E-cigarette!! “
Or “At night I utilize my time by listening to podcasts on my Wireless speakers, come on, speakers dont emit radiation, ok???”
Have you heard people around you saying this with a “ignore maro” tone? And do you also with a big question mark attitude think of “jane do bhai, aapane ko iss kya lena dena” and “just moved on” by thinking nope, these wrong or ignorant lifestyle inclusions cannot be a risk factor for we are getting closer to Cancer…what I am thinking!! Well then, my friend, you really need to get your knowledge updated.

The truth is we have the power to minimize the effects of these lifestyle factors around us, kind of lurking around us-captivating-pulling us towards them, and but we do maximize the chance of keeping our health good and live a long and happy life under constant thought and pressure and that longing for “Living happily ever after”. Let’s give it a thought today and know how our changing Lifestyle factors are now the true risk factors for Cancer just like the “Devil in Disguise”?

Smoking fashion: We all know “Smoking Kills’ ‘…then whether it’s 1 cigarette to a pack of cigarettes or even new age E-Cigarettes or flavored Hookahs’. They all have tobacco or nicotine like substances being the leading cause of death due to Lung cancers or Oral cancers worldwide, on usage over a period of time. With prosperity, power comes money and money attracts all these upend mindsets. We need to inculcate the habit that with good money you may follow your dreams of traveling around, pursuing new hobby’s and still be followed & liked on Instagram or Snapchat by your group of friends & Followers, with a bonus of living a long life and saving the money you would have smoked away otherwise!!

Alcohol fad: With the rise in “Happy Hours’ & “Good Times” we all embraced the saying “Alcohol is man’s worst enemy. But the Bible Says’ Love thy enemy”. I mean we have really accepted this worst enemy of ours and the rising numbers of incidence rates of Liver damage, pancreatic cancers or colorectal cancers have been on the rise too. Not to forget deaths due to “drink & drive” and falls and violence. Ethanol or Ethyl alcohol in small or large quantities is fatal to your heart, brain & liver. Whatever brands big or small, local or imported, all types of Alcohol fads affect your health in a big way. Your body, your genes and the type of diet you consume with alcohol all have shown to have a high correlation with developing cancers in later ages. Staying away from Alcohol is simply & truly “Living Life King-Size ”.

Gadget Freak: “Your cell phone has replaced your friends, your adventures, your memory… but don’t let it replace You”. We have all become gadget freaks. All ages from babies to oldies all are constantly with their smartphone. We cannot imagine our lives without our cell phones, internet, social media, even the blog I am writing is using my laptop. It has spanned our lives, our homes, offices, schools, everywhere we go.

There is no life without them. We sleep with our phones next to our pillows nearing the charging points. We eat dinner around the table with eyes on the TV or iPad screens. We go out for a run and our smart watches are paired with our Bluetooth headphones because we are relaxing with music…. we are never ever without our gadgets…. But we forget that these are electronic devices, and they breathe out or emit radiation and some can be extremely hazardous. The radiation exposure in the long term may cause serious health conditions like brain tumors, blood cancer and some have already shown birth-defects in babies. We read about this so many times and we also follow a thorough “Digital Detox” on a weekly or monthly basis, just like any other “Fad”. Can we come out of this “Digital mode” and turn on the “No-gadget mode” for just 1 moment of our life and for the sake of our health. “Time to get into a digital lockdown, it’s Time to think”.

Bold Beauty: “Wear the Real You!!” This saying has become the new “Skincare Mantra” of the decade. Most daily cleansing materials, skin care products, cosmetic goods all speak this one language. “Explore our best, organic, non-comedogenic, paraben free, cruelty free products and we will make you feel 10 years younger just like a “Baby’s skin-The Real You”. To a great extent new age skin care products are getting really good, highly advanced, organic, expensive. But excess use of these skin care products can cause skin cancers or extreme skin issues. So, trust me the Instagramable “No Make-up” is the new look and a good weekly detox is a must for a perfect Skin care routine. Go ahead flaunt that clear skin and be the New “Bold & Beautiful”.

There could be several reasons, elements or issues that could be the risk factor for having Cancer. But it is said by the wise “What you do today can improve all your tomorrows”. So, staying natural, being yourself, sleeping well & trusting your body signs are some great ways to early prevention of any disease, even the worst of the Cancers. Let’s pledge in honor of all those amazing Cancer Survivors that we will “stay safe, be calm & fight on” this Devil in Disguise together!!!

Nadi Pariksha to find out prognosis of cancer.

Cancer, one of the most challenging and spreading diseases of the 21st century, which has now officially become the most dangerous killer in the world according to the World Health Organization.

No one can deny the fact that cancer is related to modernization and an unhealthy and stressful lifestyle. Scientists are making their best efforts to fight against this disease; however, the sure-shot cure is still awaited.
In ayurveda, the concept of cancer is discussed by Charaka and Sushruta as Arbud and Granthi (inflammatory and non-inflammatory swelling) in our body.
Vata, Pitta Kapha are 3 critical forces which maintain our healthy status.

In cancer these 3 forces are completely disturbed causing tissue damage (dhatu vitiation), metabolic disaster and signs and symptoms of cancer.
Granthi can be considered benign tumours , Arbuda resembling malignant tumours.
Granthi along with all ३ dosha in association with mansa, meda, asthi dhatu forming defined capsulated swelling, palpable, more painful if vata dominated, burning if pitta, and dull or no pain heaviness if kapha dominated.
In Arbuda- malignant tumours, similar to granthi pathogenesis but dominated by pitta dosha and rasa, rakta dhatu, causing severe inflammatory and tissue damaging and rapid body wide spread. This Makes it challenging to treat and even difficult to control its spread in the body.
Imbalanced all 3 dosha loses coordination with all dhatu (body tissues), deterioration of normal body system function expressing wide range of signs and symptoms with loss of appetite, sudden weight loss (Cachexia), pain, disturbed body system functioning, reassembling with other normal disorders, this is making cancer challenging to detect in early stages.
Diagnosis through ashtavidha pariksha, mainly nadi pariksha can be done with experts in Ayurveda.
Nadi, which is durbal, Kathin, gambhir shows above symptoms of cancer. Also, as per predominance of dosha nadi properties are observed.
Prognosis in different stages of cancer and its severity can be diagnosed with Nadi pariksha. Sukhasadhya, kashtasadhya or asadhya.
To avoid and as preventative care, everyone should follow a healthy lifestyle and stress-free mind. Consult an Ayurveda physician to diagnose cancer in an early stage to gain a healthy and peaceful life.

Did you know? Cancer is not new, it was defined 5000 years ago.

Cancer, one of the most deadly challenges spreading drastically in the 21st century, has now officially become the most dangerous killer in the world according to the World Health Organization.
February is Cancer prevention and awareness month. It is no secret that early detection and treatment is the key to prevention that can save millions of lives every year.

Ayurveda has described cancer 5000 years ago. Nowadays, Ayurvedic medicines and panchakarma for cancers are also included through multidisciplinary treatment approaches at many hospitals.
The knowledge given by Ayurveda about cancer is beneficial in both preventive and curative care.

According to ‘Charaka’ and ‘Sushruta Samhitas’, cancer is described as inflammatory or non-inflammatory swelling and mentioned either as ‘Granthi’ (minor neoplasm) or ‘Arbuda’ (major neoplasm).Tridoshas cause excessive metabolic crisis resulting in proliferation and cancer cell formation.Furthermore, Ayurvedic classification of neoplasm depends on various clinical symptoms in relation to Tridoshas.
Group 1
Diseases that can be named as clear malignancy, which includes arbuda and granthi, e.g. mamsarbuda (melanoma) and raktarbuda (leukemia), mukharbuda (oral cancer), etc.
Group 2
Diseases that can be considered as cancer, such as incurable ulcers with e.g. tridosaj gulmas (abdominal tumors like carcinomas of the stomach and liver or lymphomas).
Group 3
Diseases with the possibility of malignancy, e.g. Visarpa (erysipelas), asadhya kamala (incurable jaundice) and nadi vrana (sinusitis).
According to Sushruta, metabolic crisis and derangement of doshas, which leads to the manifestation of tumors is majorly caused by lifestyle errors, unhealthy foods, poor hygiene and bad habits.
Cancer in each person differs according to the person’s exposure to pathogens and genetic constitutions which make each of them react differently to the same diet.
Considering all above, we can adopt the following preventive steps for preventing cancers.
1. Regular screening – Regular check ups are very essential in preventive care. Consulting your doctor for simple yet alarming symptoms are very essential. Neglecting small cysts, pain associated with it or neglecting metabolic impairments causes big damage afterwards in cases of cancer. So screening is a must for all age groups.
2. Identifying risk groups – Many times genetics / family history plays a significant role. In cases of breast/ uterine / ovarian cancer, regular check up including CA 125 is necessary if having family history of the same.
Many times occupational hazards like exposure to certain chemicals, radioactive agents induce carcinogenesis. Hence it is necessary to have regular check ups. Food habits like tobacco, alcohol also play a significant role in inducing cancer or making pathologies worse. So be careful about your bad habits.

3. Identifying and neutralizing carcinogens – Knowledge about carcinogens is very important. Tobacco, certain chemicals, hybrid food items, exposure to radiation are certain identified carcinogens. Adopting a healthy working atmosphere is very essential to avoid exposure to carcinogens.
4. Adopting a healthy lifestyle – According to Ayurveda, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very necessary. Keeping good metabolic health, good eating habits and apt lifestyle modification can reduce risk of cancer.

Many types of cancer showed the first alarming sign as metabolic impairment like sudden weight loss, loss of appetite, poor gut health, impaired excretion etc. Always keep an eye on your metabolic health. Remember, early detection and immediate action is the key to prevent any type of cancer damage.

One step towards Cancer awareness….Not Fear But Fight

Last month was celebrated as cancer awareness month. There are many cases of diagnosed and undiagnosed cancer surrounded by us and concern is fast growing. Awareness about causes, screening and risk is very essential and can also lead to people making healthier lifestyle choices.Poor lifestyle, longer working hours, increasingly stressful lives, smoking, alcohol consumption, use of contraception, are all contributing factors in occurrence of different cancers.

Cancer is a generic term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body. Other terms used are malignant tumors and neoplasms. One defining feature of cancer is the rapid creation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their usual boundaries, and which can then invade adjoining parts of the body and spread to other organs.

In Ayurveda, cancer is described as inflammatory or non-inflammatory swelling and mentioned either as ‘Granthi’ (minor neoplasm) or ‘Arbuda’ (major neoplasm) in Sushrut Samhita. Aggravated Vata and Kapha doshas along with Rakta, Mansa, Meda vikruti are common pathological changes seen in cancer. Ayurved also focuses on the equilibrium of all Dosha, Dhatu and Mala for prophylaxis angle.

In this new era, we are exposed to lots of chemicals, hybrid food items, pollution and wrong lifestyle. It is badly affecting our Quality Of Life but still maintaining or balancing metabolic health, stress quotient proper is very essential for taking care of equilibrium. This equilibrium can be well maintained.

Alarming numbers of Cancers according to World Health Organization (WHO)

●  Approx. about 70% of deaths from cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries
●Around one-third of deaths from cancer are due to tobacco use, high body mass index, alcohol consumption, low fruit and vegetable intake, and lack of regular physical activity
● The most common type of cancers are breast (2.26 million cases), lung (2.21 million cases), colon- rectum (1.93 million cases), prostate (1.41 million cases), skin (non-melanoma) (1.20 million cases), and stomach (1.09 million cases)

Here are some keys for cancer awareness and good Quality Of Life –

1. Early diagnosis –

When identified early, cancer is more likely to respond to treatment and can result in a greater probability of survival and less morbidity, as well as less expensive treatment. Significant improvements can be made in the lives of cancer patients by detecting cancer early and avoiding delays in care. Vigilance about every symptom, early diagnostic test and proper treatment approach is very important to avoid late complications.

2. Periodic screening of risk group

Many times genetic, hereditary, previous medical histories in case of uterine cancers are linked with occurrence of cancer.
Identifying the risk groups by knowing family history, other causative factors like exposure to chemicals, radiations etc is key in screening programs. Periodic diagnostic test and check is must in risk groups.
Special diagnostic tests like PAP smear, HPV, mammography etc should be included in routine check up after a certain age. Awareness about self-examination of breasts is very important for every lady. So identifying and screening the risk group is very important.

3. Awareness about causative factors

Tobacco, cigarettes, alcohol consumption, exposure to UV lights, certain chemicals, radiation, increased weight, diabetes, wrong food habits, synthetic food additives, hybrid food items, food incompatibilities are some underlying causes of cancer. Avoiding such causes and following a healthy lifestyle is very important. Maintaining healthy metabolism and balancing equilibrium between all doshas is very important.

4. Proper treatment and palliative care

A correct cancer diagnosis is essential for appropriate and effective treatment because every cancer type requires a specific treatment regimen. Treatment usually includes radiotherapy, chemotherapy and/or surgery. Determining the goals of treatment is an important first step. The primary goal is generally to cure cancer or to considerably prolong life. Improving the patient’s quality of life is also an important goal. This can be achieved by support for the patient’s physical, psychosocial and spiritual well-being and palliative care in terminal stages of cancer.
Principles Of Ayurveda regarding food habits, lifestyle modifications and remedies like panchakarma proving very effective and promising. Ayurveda is helpful in both treatment and in palliative care.
So, in this cancer awareness week, let’s come together to understand and implement steps to keep life away from cancer.
