Ganesh Festival

Lord Ganesha symbolizes wisdom, understanding, and a discriminating intellect that one must possess to attain perfection in life. He is one who pacifies all worries and obstacles from life.

We all are eagerly waiting to welcome our beloved Ganapati bappa. After 3 years of many restrictions due to the pandemic, this year we all are planning a huge celebration. Creative and unique decorations in pandals, authentic pooja, different Prasad items are creating very positive vibes amongst all of us. Apart from these many Ganapati mandals are also arranging different competitions like decoration competition, Modak making competition, various competitions for kids and even some cultural events. All of these have direct or indirect associations with our health. It’s true that festivals and its mass celebrations are responsible for good community or social health. Let’s see how true it is!!

According to Ayurveda health is not merely absence of disease but it is a perfect equilibrium of physiological, psychological and social health. This festival is having micro and macro impact on all three domains of health. It is said perfectly, Ganapati bappa brings happiness by demolishing all the obstacles.

Ganapati festival and its impact on Physical health domain –

There are so many festivals celebrated in India. Festival rituals are always associated with local food and ways of seasonal care which are very essential to prevent health hazards. Ganapati festival comes under the season of Varsha rutu. The low digestive fire and metabolic toxins always hamper gut health these days. Ukadiche modak is a perfect recipe which minimizes load on digestive systems and takes care of our nutritional requirements. Daily sweet food items used as Naivedya like ladoo, kheer, panchakhadya, jaggery and coconut, milk added with sugar reduces accumulation of pitta and balances vata and avoids outburst of pitta disorders in the very next season.

Ganapati festival and its impact on Psychological health domain –

It is very common to observe that all the members of the family intermingle with each other in a very happy mood in Ganpati festival, be it while preparing Modaks in the kitchen place or making pooja arrangements or little ones of family giving out their best ideas in decorations, pooja arrangements etc. Effectively, Ganpati bappa keeps the family united and happy.

Especially after the pandemic, many people are seen to face numerous psychological problems. work pressure, disturbed family structures, lack of conversation and quality time is lacking in many families. This Ganesh festival is an opportunity for all of us to bond with each other again. A happy, positive time with family while worshiping Ganapati is necessary to drop down many psychological issues.

When it comes to large scale, we all know that Lokmanya Tilak started public Ganapati festivals for many reasons. It has now evolved to a different level where every Ganapati mandal acts as a single big family of relatively unrelated people with each other. Everyone is involved and devoted to a single cause. This interaction, positivity, creativity, happiness, helping sense removes negativity of mind. The positive vibes of festivals are responsible for removing negative emotions from mind.

Ganapati festival and its impact on social health domain –

Social health is an individual’s ability to handle, and act based on different social conditions. Good social health relations involve good communication, empathy, and care for family, friends, and colleagues. Ganapati festivals have many social benefits. Festivals promote a feeling of social harmony, enhance social identities, offer a release from stresses of everyday life, positively influence subjective well-being, contribute to a sense of place, and build better multicultural societies.

Festivals and special events during it lead to many benefits within the host community. As stated earlier, these benefits include building social cohesion, providing a sense of belonging, providing public goods beyond entertainment, and providing a socially acceptable area for public actions.

Rolling economy, business opportunities, creativity, improvement in other domains of life are some added advantages of Ganapati festival.

“Wishing a very Happy Ganesh Chaturthi. May Lord Ganesha bless each and every day of our lives!!”

Daily Fats and Oils

Rekindle your Inner Agni, in the right way this Monsoon!!

We have learnt about superfoods, their facts and myths till now. But the most important, last but not the least, are fats and oils. Let’s know more about this macromolecule.

Now, the monsoon is going on and the people have cravings for oily & spicy food due to the cool climate. In monsoon season particularly our digestive fire is low (Agni Mandya). One should avoid too much oily, deep-fried and spicy food.

In Ayurveda, sneha means a soft, oily or lubricating substance and snehana is the treatment process of oleation of the body and gut, in this procedure ghee or medicated oils are applied to the body. Snehana can be administered both externally (bahya) and internally (abhyantara), with the main types of sneha: oil (taila), clarified butter oil-ghee (ghritha). Snehana is used to detoxify organs and lubricate or soften tissues in the body.

If you are not undergoing such Ayurvedic methods of oleation then you may add suitable fats and oils to your daily diet according to the season and tridoshas.

Nutritional facts of oils and fats:

Oils and fats suitable for sauteing/shallow frying in monsoon:

The Oils & fat which are rich in monounsaturated fats are beneficial for sauteing and shallow frying. (For example olive oil, groundnut oil and unsalted butter.) For deep frying purposes Sunflower oil and ghee are suitable.

Oil recommendations according to Tridoshas:

Vata Body type:
People with this body type are thin, fast-moving, and quick thinkers. They have a dominance of wind and space in their body, which makes them prone to dryness, poor appetite, and irregular digestion. People with this body type should refrain from consuming cold food items and should consume nourishing food containing healthy fats.
Eating food items which are hot in nature can be beneficial for people with vata body type in monsoon as the vata is aggravated in this season. Hence the best-suited cooking oils for this body type are –

  • Peanut Oil
  • Mustard Oil
  • Olive Oil

Pitta Body type:
Pitta body type people have the dominance of fire and water. People with this body type have oily skin, a fragile body and an aggressive personality. These people are prone to heat and have good digestion. People with this body type should consume food items that will keep them cool and hydrated. Along with consuming food items that are cool in nature and have high water content, the food for these people should be cooked in either of the following oils –

  • Ghee/ Clarified butter
  • Coconut oil

Kapha Body type:
People with Kapha body type are dominated by the elements of water and earth. People with this body type have a solid body(body structure is broad and bulky musculature), calm nature and are transparent in their behaviour. Due to their bulky body type, they are lazy in nature and have slow digestion. People with this dosha should include foods in their diet which would help to enhance their metabolism. The oils to be avoided by these people in monsoon are cold in nature and should include oils that are hot in nature –

  • Safflower Oil
  • Sesame Oil
  • Mustard Oil
  • Groundnut Oil

To restore your wellbeing by enhancing your metabolism and reducing the aggravated vata, one must follow Rutucharya. i.e. seasonal recommendations as per your body type.

Worship Woman’s Psychological and Mental Strength

– an Ayurveda Perspective

Meaning – Goddess Durga is omnipresent. She is the embodiment of power, peace, and intelligence in all beings. I worship her with all devotion so that she blesses me with happiness and prosperity.
Different words from above chant like शान्तिरूपेण, श्रद्धारुपेण, छायारुपेण symbolises the unique power of Goddess and unique power of every woman. These sets of emotions; power purely belong to womanhood.

Women are the centre of creation and with this unique power, she possesses a special set of emotions including extra tolerance, multitasking abilities, affectionate, nurturing, and caring abilities.

This strong emotion set is a reflection of good psychological health which is interdependent on physiological changes or physical health. As women are facing constant changes in lifestyle due to evolving physiological changes. These changes always affect her mental or psychological health. So special care will be required to maintain equilibrium.

Psychological, Emotional, and Mental states of women in their different life stages:
  • Behind every successful man, there is a woman, and my wife is that woman, but she might not be happy because she may have sacrificed her career. Does that lead to mental disturbance?
  • I am successful due to my mother, but your mother may be struggling with an emotional breakdown due to menopausal changes. Does anyone notice or care for her during menopause?
  • She is coping with post-pregnancy changes, less breast milk and feeding issues, and sleepless nights. Now she is talking about baby blues / postpartum depression and asking for psychological counseling help. Does the family help her to cope with it or advise her to neglect it?

Changing physiology is a constant thing in women’s lives. Monthly menstrual cycle-related changes from Menarche, pregnancy, postpartum period, perimenopause period and menopausal period all are impacting both physical and psychological domains of her health.

These constant changes and hormonal imbalances often lead to disturbances in Tridoshic (Vata – Pitta – Kapha ) balance. This imbalance always affects the mental health of women very commonly.

Anxiety, stress, body shaming, family pressure, postpartum depression, menopausal depression, and emotional breakdown are often associated with women’s life. She always tries to neglect this burden to maintain family harmony.

This Navratri, let’s understand her better for caring for her psychological needs.
Ayurveda can be helpful to maintain this harmony of Tridosha within her by monitoring inner health and Nadi along with Tridoshic balance. Tracking of Emotional quotients, stress, and thoughts levels are the unique feature of Nadi Tarangini. Required lifestyle modifications for maintaining a good emotional quotient will be advised for maintaining harmony and health.

Caring tips for maintaining good mental health for Women

  • During Adolescence age –

Girls are vulnerable at this age. They are facing numerous new changes in the body including starting from menarche, breast development, etc. Along with hormonal changes, the extra stress related to school performance, identity crisis, family tensions, and body shaming always leads to a complex mental breakdown.

Family support, friendly talks, identification of exact problems and its solution, and proper guidance on diet and lifestyle changes according to Ayurveda are very essential at this age.

  • During pregnancy and postpartum period –

Proper nutritional, and diet care is very essential during pregnancy. Ayurved mentioned briefly antenatal care.

Postpartum depression and stress are common nowadays. The struggle of a breastfeeding mother with emotional breakdown along with tired sleepless days always leads to many psychological problems.

Proper dietary guidelines and family support are a must to overcome this phase.

  • During menopausal age –

It is the period of cessation of many hormones. This change is not so easy to cope with for everyone. Menopausal depression and anxiety are the most common and highlighted subjects.

Socializing, and encouraging women to continue their hobbies and excel in their skillset is the best way to cope with it.

This required balance between physical and mental health can be tracked every day with the help of Ayurveda. The physical and emotional quotient can be tracked and scored. Dietary modifications, water intake, and lifestyle modifications are suggested to maintain the harmony of balance and to improve mental health.

So, accept the changes, correct them with Ayurveda and lifestyle guidance and move on happily.
