The well-being of our body and mind is important but it is frequently neglected entity by all working men leading to feeling of constant fatigue, lack of energy and reduced ability to work. 

In the physical sense, this vitality refers to feeling healthy, capable, and energetic. This vitality is seen to be lacking in many men while facing constant challenges. Ayurveda focuses exclusively on men’s health by giving guidance for good Quality Of Life wrt men’s health under the concept of Vajikaran.

What is vitality and strength? 

Vitality means the state of being full of energy. It is person’s ability to live, grow, and develop. Vitality also refers to having energy and being vigorous and active. 

In the physical sense, this vitality refers to feeling healthy, capable, and energetic. Mental vitality is a mental energy to think positively, indicates that a person is in good mental shape and have sufficient mental powers and thinking stamina to cope with problems. It is also known as a state of mental alertness and effectiveness, which enhances efficacy.

Vigor is the exuberant and resilient strength of the body or mind and stamina is the ability to sustain an activity over a long period of time.Together, Vigour, Vitality and Stamina refer to complete well-being of mind and body to perform at its best.

Unfortunately, many men are struggling to find and keep vitality, vigor and stamina for themselves. They are stuck grinding their way through their work and even day today activities and lacking joy and passion in their life. 

Vitality is strongly associated with general physical and mental health, but it is not a simple relationship. 

Research suggests that most things that have a negative effect on physical health or mood also have a negative effect on vitality. Smoking, poor diet, inactivity, and a stressful environment are all negatively associated with vitality and health.

Vajikarana or Vrishya chikitsa is a one of eight major specialities of the Ashtanga Ayurveda. This subject is concerned with vitality, aphrodisiacs, virility and improving health of progeny. 

Vitality- An Ayurveda perspective: 

In Ayurveda, there are three key principles that are direct physiological manifestations of energy and vitality. 

  1. Ojas – Ojas is the super-fine essence of kapha dosha and of all seven bodily tissues. It is the primary source of vitality, strength, and immunity in the body.
  2. Agni – Agni is the metabolic fire that digests food and provides energy to the body and mind—on both gross and subtle levels.
  3. Prana – Prana is the vital breath, or life force energy that animates each of us with life. It is also the super-fine essence of Vata dosha.

Different causative factors lead to dosha vitiation which furthermore leads to disturbances in abovesaid entities associated with vitality. The manifestation is different according to individual prakruti and underlying doshasthiti. 

Symptoms like constant fatigue, exhaustion, lack of energy, boredom, decreased work efficacy is always associated with decrease in vitality. 

Often the root cause of decreased vitality is  exhaustion caused by inappropriate lifestyle and over stress. 

Fatigue is one of the most common complaints seen in men and its cause is often multifactorial. It can require a medical workup, including blood testing.

Factors affecting vitality in Men:

  1. Impaired metabolism:

Impaired metabolism is always responsible for decreasing vitality. Digestive fire i.e., Agni is responsible for conversion, assimilation and absorption of food that provides energy to all body part.  

When Agni is weak, it can turn the same things into ama, or toxins. Ama has the qualities of heaviness and sluggishness and can make us feel fatigued. It is responsible for reducing physical and mental efficacy affecting vitality negativity. 

  1. Poor sleep quality:

For your physical and emotional health, sleep is essential. You will probably feel exhausted, irritated, and less productive during the day if you don’t get enough good sleep.

  1. Nutrient deficiencies:

Your body needs a range of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, protein, and healthy fats, to operate correctly. You may experience exhaustion, weakness, or even depression if your diet is deficient in certain minerals.  

  1. Dehydration:

Numerous internal processes, including maintaining energy levels, controlling body temperature, and removing toxins, depend on water. You can have fatigue, a headache, or dizziness if you do not consume enough water or other liquids. So good Hydration is always associated with good metabolism and hence viability. 

  1. Sedentary Lifestyle:

Physical activity is not only good for your heart, muscles, and bones, but also for your mood, cognition, and energy levels. If you are sitting for long periods of time, you may feel stiff, achy, or sleepy. Always incorporate more movement into your day including stretches, walk, or do some light exercises for good vitality. 

  1. Chronic stress:

Stress is a normal reaction to difficult circumstances, but when it persists over an extended period of time, it may be harmful to your physical and mental health. You can have fatigue, mood swings, or difficulty falling asleep if you are continually feeling pressured, nervous, or overwhelmed. This leads to decrease in vitality. 

Identifying the symptoms is the main key. 

Maintaining health harmony is the key for good vitality in men.  For that assessment of underlying dosha is particularly important. 

Dosha and its role in affecting individual specific vitality:

  • When Vata dosha gets vitiated, you may experience fatigue, anxiety, and dizziness which leads into decrease in vitality. Identifying it at an early stage is very important. 
  • Impatience, irritability, and frustration indicate a burnout situation where Pitta has become aggravated and out of imbalance.
  • When Kapha is out of balance symptoms such as lethargy, dullness, heaviness, and depression are often experienced.

Finding balance in your life allows you to tap into the energy and passion that has eluded you. Specifically, having balance between the different domains of your life is what increases your vitality.

An alarm related to men’s health:

If you are facing issues like lack of energy, constant fatigue, anxiety, indigestion, elevated cholesterol, rising blood pressure, increased blood sugar levels, or stiffness, these are indicators that require your consideration. 

When men get out of balance within tridosha,  they can encounter problems in three main areas: sexual dysfunction, cardiovascular disease and lack of energy throughout the day.

Balance your imbalances 

Mind your vata. The lightning qualities of vata decrease endurance and stamina. Keep your vata in check with a solid daily routine, plenty of sleep, and a conscious effort to stay focused on your self care.

1. Food as Medicine:

Food is the cornerstone of life. It’s never only about calories, it’s also about giving your body the right nutrition as per your dosha. For example, you may think salads are healthy for the body but for those with vata dominance, having raw salads daily can spell disaster.

Agni, the digestive fire within everyone, is the engine that processes your food. If your agni is balanced, digestion is good and energy levels stay high. Conversely, a weak agni leads to discomfort and multiple illnesses. Choose foods that are easy to digest and support your dosha.

Ayurveda also believes in eating locally and seasonally. One Ayurvedic tip to stay healthy is to have generous helpings of seasonal fruits and vegetables. 

Ayurveda incorporates spices across all facets since they have a variety of health benefits. Ginger, cumin, and coriander can be used freely by almost everybody, but hot spices like chili peppers should be used judiciously by pittas as they tend to have a fiery constitution.

2. Move your body wisely:

Exercise is crucial for everyone, but especially for men’s health. Ayurveda emphasizes finding the right kind of movement for your dosha.

Vatas are light and airy by nature so they need to be more grounded than usual. Yoga and weight training would suit men with Vata prakruti best.

Naturally energetic pittas should indulge in swimming or running to stay active.

Kapha men tend to have heavier frames and benefit from brisk walks or dancing—anything to keep them on their feet. They can engage in slightly more intense forms of workouts, too!

Although exercise is important, you should listen to your body’s signals. Don’t push yourself to exhaustion. If you’re feeling drained and out of it, don’t hesitate to take a rest day. Exercise should energize and make you feel good about yourself, not drain you.

3. Don’t compromise on Sleep:

It is essential to get enough sleep so your mind and body have time to refresh and rejuvenate.

Develop a bedtime routine that relaxes you. Vata men should consider a warm bath with calming essential oils like lavender. If you’re a pitta man, walk or read a book before hitting the hay. Kaphas should avoid heavy evening meals and do light stretching or meditation at bedtime to calm the body and mind.

Avoid screen time before bed. The blue light emitted by your devices tends to disrupt your sleep cycle. Opt for picking a book to read or indulging in calming breathing exercises to unwind and calm yourself at night. And finally, try to get to bed by 10:00 pm and awake by 6:00 am.

4. Silence the inner Stress:

Some stress is a natural part of life, but chronic stress can wreak havoc on your health via your body and mind. Ayurveda has a few meditation practices to keep that at bay.

Meditation is a sure-shot way to manage stress. In just a few minutes a day, meditation helps vatas ground their scattered energy, pittas cool their fiery nature, and kaphas break out of mental sluggishness.

Pranayama, yogic breathing exercises, are fantastic for stress management. Practices like alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) can calm the mind and promote relaxation.

5. Embrace Herbs:

Ayurveda endorses an array of herbs to support overall health for the body, mind, and soul. Some key herbs for men’s health include Ashwagandha, shivaji, gokshur etc. 

6. Cleanse and detoxify:

Neglecting this task can lead to the development of persistent stress, which opens the door to a range of other complications like feelings of unease, despondency, and sleeplessness. Participating in stress-alleviating practices like mindfulness, deep breathing routines or yoga can bring about a sense of tranquility and foster emotional balance.

The demands of an evolving, modern life often lead to stress, poor lifestyle choices and even impact on the intimate side. 

Unlike the conventional methods that often treat symptoms in isolation, Ayurveda emphasises the interconnectedness of bodily systems and aims to address the root cause of health concerns through natural, personalised treatments.
