Cancer, one of the most challenging and spreading diseases of the 21st century, which has now officially become the most dangerous killer in the world according to the World Health Organization.

No one can deny the fact that cancer is related to modernization and an unhealthy and stressful lifestyle. Scientists are making their best efforts to fight against this disease; however, the sure-shot cure is still awaited.
In ayurveda, the concept of cancer is discussed by Charaka and Sushruta as Arbud and Granthi (inflammatory and non-inflammatory swelling) in our body.
Vata, Pitta Kapha are 3 critical forces which maintain our healthy status.

In cancer these 3 forces are completely disturbed causing tissue damage (dhatu vitiation), metabolic disaster and signs and symptoms of cancer.
Granthi can be considered benign tumours , Arbuda resembling malignant tumours.
Granthi along with all ३ dosha in association with mansa, meda, asthi dhatu forming defined capsulated swelling, palpable, more painful if vata dominated, burning if pitta, and dull or no pain heaviness if kapha dominated.
In Arbuda- malignant tumours, similar to granthi pathogenesis but dominated by pitta dosha and rasa, rakta dhatu, causing severe inflammatory and tissue damaging and rapid body wide spread. This Makes it challenging to treat and even difficult to control its spread in the body.
Imbalanced all 3 dosha loses coordination with all dhatu (body tissues), deterioration of normal body system function expressing wide range of signs and symptoms with loss of appetite, sudden weight loss (Cachexia), pain, disturbed body system functioning, reassembling with other normal disorders, this is making cancer challenging to detect in early stages.
Diagnosis through ashtavidha pariksha, mainly nadi pariksha can be done with experts in Ayurveda.
Nadi, which is durbal, Kathin, gambhir shows above symptoms of cancer. Also, as per predominance of dosha nadi properties are observed.
Prognosis in different stages of cancer and its severity can be diagnosed with Nadi pariksha. Sukhasadhya, kashtasadhya or asadhya.

Importance of understanding Agni in the diagnostic process

Digestive fire is the life of a human being. The process of digestive juices which is called as Pitta in Ayurveda plays an important role in the process of digestion and metabolism. Digestive fire work at the site of duodenum which is exactly behind the umbilicus. Pitta which is hot or ushna in nature with sharp/ tikshna properties and vata which is mobile/ Chala and light/ laghu enhances digestive fire.

In the science of Ayurveda, the root of all diseases is the vitiated digestive fire or Agni. And that is why Agni plays an important role in the diagnosis of any physical, physiological and psychological disorders. The Agni in a balanced state which shows proper hunger, digestion, nourishment of body tissues and mind is called Samagni. When the Agni is vitiated with the influence of Tridosha, Vata, Pitta and kapha it is diagnosed as Vishamagni, Tikshangni, and mandagni

Vishamagani shows a pattern of irregularities in appetite pattern, weak metabolism, poor nourishment of tissues and mind showing symptoms like bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, piles, etc.

Tikshnagni provokes Agni with excess heat and sharpness which results in excess hunger, burning in the chest, hyperacidity, acid reflux, headache, etc.
Mandagni is the weak digestive fire that results in indigestion, loss of appetite, laziness, weak metabolism, weakness, dullness, obesity, etc.

Digestive fire differs or predictable as per one’s Prakruti or body type. Vata predominant prakruti has irregular or vishamagni. Pitta predominant prakruti has tikshnagni and kapha predominant prakruti has mandagni.
To analyze and understand the exact state of digestive fire is key to accurate diagnosis of any disease. Once the digestive fire is corrected with proper Ayurveda based medicines, personalized diet, sleep and exercise will help to cure the disease easily.
Everyone should maintain their digestive fire in a balanced state I.e. samagni to gain health and a long life.

Relationships From The Point Of Ayurveda

Love, relationship and 3 dosha Opposite poles attract each other. And this is very true if we consider our physical and psychological traits.

In Ayurveda body constitution or body type or prakruti is defined as Manas that is psychological and sharir i.e. physical and physiological. If you know what is body type of your partner you can easily accept or change yourself for better life.

Body type not only covers the mind state but also their physical appearance strength stamina and digestion metabolism which leads to final immunity.
If you could find out whether this is normal or balanced state of your partner then you can easily accept their habits, nature and food preferences. Resulting no one will blame others by their nature or hobbies or food habits.

Kapha person is very calm, steady and loves arts. To balance kapha needs the opposite pitta. Pitta is very courageous, dynamic and supports kapha mind. Also, vata is very creative and charming which enhances kapha artistic mind. Plan for a Riverside romantic dinner or musical mehfil.
Kapha is having slow digestion but good stamina. Select light and low calorie diet. Kapha likes spicy, bitter taste. So if your partner cooks or order food of your preference then that is most healthy. Can workout slowly and steadily but for longer duration.

Pitta is very aggressive and angry in nature. To cool down this, kapha helps with its calm and loving nature. Pitta are very romantic and likes more and more challenges. Pitta partner should or can surprise him or her with romantic, soothing, candle light dinner and calming music. Pitta has strong appetite and digestion. Pitta loves sweet, bitter, astringent. Pitta person can consume heavy and high calories diet. Pitta has moderate stamina so go for mild gym workout and fresh air exercises more.

Vata personality is very dynamic cherishing and full of energy and enthusiasm. Sometimes to control it needs steadiness of kapha and to flow this energy in correct and positive way needs pitta support. Throw a dance party with many friends will be a big surprise and appreciable to vata. Vata has irregular hunger and unstable digestion with fair strength and stamina. Vata likes sweet, sour and salty food. Go for moderate workouts together with more hiking and biking.

Now try to find out your partners body type and accept their habits and routines and try to mould for your best friend or life partner’s healthy and peaceful life.
If you accept each others with his or her good and bad. Actually those bad are by your thoughts but they are good for their prakruti.

What is metabolism?

In today’s modern era we have often heard about ‘Metabolism’. Metabolism is the body process which comprises both anabolism and catabolism. Catabolism is the process of breaking down complex molecules into simpler units. In this process there is energy generation.
Anabolism is the antagonistic process to catabolism in which synthesis or build-up aspect of metabolism occurs. These processes are continuously occurring in the body, however, time duration of the day has an impact on the rate of metabolism. The key to weight loss success may be understanding how your metabolism really works. It’s necessary to understand the dosha kala effect on metabolism. Eating the right amount, the right kind of food and at the right day time(Dosha kala) will help in weight management.

Ayurveda divides 24 hours into groups wherein one particular Dosha is dominant. So, how is the division made:

“Early to rise and early to bed makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

We have been bombarded with such phrases from our childhood.
We can relate to such phrases now during modern new norms.
Ayurveda dosha kala(day time) and metabolism(body processes) are two equal and important sides of well being and healthy eating.

Kapha Kala and its effect on metabolism:

According to ancient Ayurveda science our ancestors have educated us about the “Dosha clock”.
In the modern science era we can connect this with metabolism which is nothing but biological clock.

As the period from 6 AM to 10 AM is Kapha Kala(Kapha time) and 6 PM to 10 PM as well, we need to rise early and perform physical activities like yoga, cardio, stretching to metabolise fat tissue. Imbalanced metabolism affects proper nourishment of kapha and meda dhatu/ fat tissues which results in obesity or weight gain.

If we rise early and perform physical activities, the Kapha will not get aggravated and the stored meda dhatu(fatty tissue) will be utilised and ultimately will help in weight loss.
In this period we should eat foods which will eliminate kapha and help in reducing it.
Easily digestible food should be consumed during kapha kala as the digestive fire and Digestive Quotient (EQ) is not very low (Mand agni) during this period . During evening kapha kala light and early dinner is advisable. Less exertion physical activities, yoga, relaxation therapies are most preferable.
For example: Tulsi mint Green tea, Ginger Tulsi tea, Cinnamon tea.

By rising early in the morning emotional quotient(EQ) increases as well. It makes the person wise with a better presence of mind.

In aspects of nutrition science too, as we rise early in the morning our metabolism gets a boost. By performing physical activities in the morning, our body secretes happy feeling hormones like serotonin and endorphins. These keep us active throughout the day and thus helps in proper functioning of physiology.

Pitta Kala and its effects on metabolism:

The period of Pitta kala is from 10 AM to 2 PM and 10 PM to 2 AM. Ayurveda science has mentioned that the digestive fire(Agni) is intense during pitta kala and hence foods that are Guru(heavy to digest) can be consumed during this period for better nourishment and balanced metabolism. Thus lunch should be the major meal of the day.

According to the new norm, some people practice having brunch in their routine which is a good way to keep the digestive fire in balance. Foods like chapati, stuffed parathas, basundi(rabadi), puran poli, chole, rajma, paneer can be consumed and easily digested in this period rather than during other dosha kala.

The pitta kala from 10 pm is well known for rejuvenation and healing process of the body. Hence sound sleep is essential for the body to build new cells and repair the wear and tear. One should not consume food or perform any physical activity during this period.

Vata Kala and its effects on metabolism:

Vata Kala begins from 2PM to 6 PM and from 2 AM to 6AM. After this there is Vata kala in which the Pachan(digestion process) continues and helps in assimilation of food. During this period no heavy meals but moist and warm foods should be consumed.
We should not consume foods which create dryness like Bhel of puffed rice, namkeen, farsan, breads, chola, rajma, potato and its products during this period.

For example- pomegranate, dry figs, walnuts and infused waters like amla- ginger infused water is advisable

Happy Mango Days.

Summer vacations are incomplete without eating Mangoes. Mango, commonly known as Aam, is called the ‘King of Fruits’. It is one of the most consumed fruits during the summer season and has many varieties including Alphanso, Kesar, etc.

Ayurved mentioned the properties of different stages of Mangoes along with their, health benefits. Many recipes having the main ingredient as mango are also described briefly in Ayurved. Here we are enlightening about common rules for eating Mangoes for gaining maximum benefits.

As we all know, Mangoes are an excellent source of nourishment for the body as they are a rich source of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and potassium. Due to this, the appropriate daily intake of Mango, alone or along with milk, can help improve appetite and boost energy levels. It also improves immunity and protects from heatstroke.

Generally, we can classify Mangos in the following 3 categories

1. Unripe Mangoes – When mangoes are not properly ripened they are extremely sour and very hot in nature. They vitiate all three doshas as well as rakta or blood. Therefore, always ensure that full-grown mangoes are well ripened and sweet before eating.

2. Naturally ripened Mangoes – The tree-ripened mangoes are heavy in nature as compared to artificially ripened ones. Tree-ripened mango has more of a sour taste than artificially ripened mango, which may lead to pitta provocation, but is superior in terms of calming Vata.

3. Artificially ripened Mangoes –According to Ayurveda, interestingly artificially ripened mangoes are light to digest. They reduce both Vata and Pitta. They are more sweet and ideal for eating.

The way in which Mangoes are consumed and their properties -

1. Squeezed mango – A squeezed mango is considered to be lighter and easier to digest than a sliced mango.

2. Sliced mango is very sweet and tasty, cooling, nourishing, and reduces Vata dosha.

3. Mango juice / Aamras is tonic, heavy, laxative, and pacifies Vata – pitta. It tends to increase Kapha but is nourishing and strength-giving in nature.

4. Mango mixed with milk – you can blend mango and milk or eat a sliced mango and follow it with a cup of warm milk or saffron milk. Mango mixed with milk calms Vata and pitta, is a tasty, nourishing, tonic, aphrodisiac, and improves complexion. It is sweet and cooling.

Dietary rules while eating Mangos

1. Always monitor the number of mangoes while consuming them. 1 to 2 mangoes or 1 bowl of Aamras is recommended for healthy adults with a good appetite.

2. Do not consume mango or Aamras at bedtime because it is very heavy for digestion.

3. Always add a pinch of dried ginger powder in Aamras. It will be beneficial for digestion.

4. You can add cow milk in Aamras which makes it lighter and easily absorbable. Don’t add other than cow milk to it. Otherwise, it will be heavier and will have an additional load on digestion.

5. Add a pinch of black pepper powder if you are prone to Kapha disorders and also recommended for the kid age group because kids are more prone to Kapha disorders.

6. Recommendations for Vata Prakruti – It reduces Vata. It is a good tonic, provides good muscle strength, and is good for immunity also. Adding pure cow ghee or dried ginger powder is best for Vata prakruti people but always keep eye on digestion while consuming it.

7. Recommendation for Pitta Prakruti – Slightly unripe mangoes are Pittakar. Add some cow milk and 1 teaspoon of cow ghee, and a pinch of cardamom powder to it. It will make it easier to digest.

8. Recommendation for kapha Prakriti – Aamaras proves Kaphakar in kapha prakriti people. It will be troublesome if they are already having a low digestive fire. Adding black pepper powder will be helpful. Restrict the quantity of Aamras. Try to avoid a mixture of Aamras and milk and ghee.
